Updated: Mar 31, 2023

The sport has been growing in popularity all over the world and every day new athletes emerge making statistics in MMA more and more important. In this article we will present five important facts about stats in MMA.

1- MMA stats are interpretive - Stats can provide valuable information about a fighter's performance, but it's important to remember that they are interpretive. In practice, even the most experienced analysts may not agree on classifying a hit as significant or not.

2 - MMA statistics can help evaluating the performance of the athletes - Through the MMA statistics it is possible to evaluate the performance of each athlete in different aspects, such as number of victories, defeats, knockouts, submissions, time of fight and effectiveness of the strikes. This information helps to understand the strengths and weaknesses of each fighter and to strategize for future fights.

3 - Significant strikes don't tell the whole story - Significant strikes statistics can provide useful information about a fighter's performance, but they don't tell the whole story. For example, a fighter might land a significant blow early in a fight and then spend most of his time dodging his opponent's attacks. In this case, significant strike statistics may suggest that the fighter is winning the fight, but in reality he may be losing.

4 - Statistics in combat sports are not black and white, because they are made by human beings and depend on interpretation, the statistics can vary between one analyst and another, but nothing that affects the decision of a fight.

5 - Context Matters - MMA stats can provide valuable information, but it's important to consider the context in which they were collected. For example, a fighter who is on a winning streak may have impressive stats, but those stats may not necessarily reflect his actual ability in a future fight against a stronger opponent. It is important to consider context when interpreting MMA stats.

Long story short, statistics in MMA are fundamental to evaluating the performance of athletes, influencing the choice of opponents, promoting the sport, evaluating the results of fights and identifying trends. Therefore, it is important that the entire MMA community pay attention to this information to better understand the sport and its athletes.
